Stainless Steel - Why The Numbers Matter

When you visit a website and see that something is made from stainless steel, it’s perfectly natural to assume that it is a high quality product however, not all stainless steel is the same and there are various grades which are suited to different applications.  Just because something is made from stainless steel doesn’t mean that it will last.  It is an easy assumption to make, especially when it comes to brackets.  If a gutter bracket is advertised as being made from “stainless steel”, surely that means it will not rust, will last for decades and is automatically a better choice than ordinary steel?

Unfortunately, it is not quite that simple.

There are different grades of stainless steel, and the numbers matter. A lot.

For something as important as a gutter bracket, sitting outside in British weather, exposed to rain, moisture, pollution, salt in coastal areas and sometimes harsh cleaning or building chemicals.  Did you know that even being close to a road which is regularly gritted during the winter, can have a significant impact on the performance of your brackets.  That is why choosing the right grade of stainless steel is not simply about paying a little more for a nicer looking material, it is about choosing the material that is actually suited to the job.

So, What Is The Difference Between 304 And 316?

304 stainless steel is a very common and useful stainless steel grade.  It has good general corrosion resistance and is widely used for everything from kitchen equipment to architectural components. 

But 316 takes things a step further.

The important difference is the addition of molybdenum to 316 stainless steel.  Molybdenum significantly improves resistance to chloride-related corrosion and gives 316 an advantage in environments where salt, moisture and pollutants are present.  This is one of the reasons 316 is widely associated with marine and demanding external applications.  And that matters when you are putting a bracket outside a building for the next 20, 30 or even 50 years.

Your gutter brackets do not live inside in a clean, dry workshop, they live outside.  They get rained on, they get dirty, they get exposed to atmospheric pollutants.  They can be exposed to coastal salt, they sit in damp areas and, depending on the installation, can be in contact with other metals.  That is exactly the sort of environment where choosing the right stainless steel grade starts to make sense.

304 Stainless Steel – Is It Really The Upgrade You Think It Is?

This is where we think it is worth asking a simple question:  If you are going to pay extra for stainless steel, why settle for the lower grade?

304 is certainly better suited to many applications than ordinary unprotected mild steel. But it is not the best choice for every external application, and it does not have the same resistance to chloride and aggressive outdoor environments as 316 and when it comes to gutter brackets, that distinction is important.

A bracket may look perfect when it is installed.  Five years later it may still look fine from the ground but corrosion does not always announce itself with dramatic rust on day one.  Surface staining, tea staining, pitting and localised corrosion can gradually affect stainless steel when the grade is not well matched to the environment.

And once a gutter bracket starts to deteriorate, the consequences can extend well beyond the bracket itself.

A weakened bracket can allow a gutter to sag.

A sagging gutter can hold standing water.

Standing water adds weight.

And suddenly the small saving made when buying the cheaper bracket starts to look less worthwhile.

What About Galvanised Mild Steel?

If the objective is simply to buy the cheapest external metal bracket, then why pay a premium for 304 stainless steel at all?

A properly galvanised mild-steel bracket can provide useful corrosion protection but its protection fundamentally depends on its zinc coating. Damage, cutting, forming, abrasion and long-term environmental exposure can all affect that protective system.

Stainless steel is different.

Its corrosion resistance comes from the material itself. It forms a very thin passive oxide layer that protects the underlying steel and can reform when the surface is exposed to oxygen.  So the real choice is not simply “Mild steel or stainless steel?”, it is “What material do I want supporting my guttering for the next several decades?”.

If you are already prepared to invest in stainless steel, we believe it makes sense to choose the grade properly suited to demanding external use and this is where the numbers really start to matter.

At Metal Gutter Brackets UK we go one step further and use the upgraded 316L stainless steel.  316L contains the same fundamental molybdenum-containing chemistry that gives the 316 family its improved resistance to chlorides and demanding environments. The “L” means low carbon.  The maximum carbon content for 316L is lower than standard 316.  Under the relevant European grades, 316L (1.4404) has a maximum carbon content of 0.030%, compared with 0.070% for 316 (1.4401).  So why does that matter? Because gutter brackets are not simply pieces of flat stainless steel, they are formed, fabricated and welded.

Welding introduces heat into the stainless steel.  With standard higher-carbon grades, there is a greater risk of sensitisation and associated inter granular corrosion in certain circumstances. The low-carbon chemistry of 316L reduces this risk and makes it particularly well suited to welded fabrications exposed to corrosive environments.

In other words, 316L is not a marketing gimmick, the “L” is there for a reason.

For a fabricated gutter bracket, where welds can be an important part of the construction, that reason matters and 316L doesn't just sound better, it is better suited to the job.

There is sometimes a temptation to look at a stainless steel specification and think:

304 = stainless steel

316 = better stainless steel

316L = just another version

But that misses the point.

The different grades exist because different applications demand different properties.

304 is a perfectly respectable engineering material but is more regularly used as an internal grade.

316 is more resistant to chloride exposure.

316L combines the corrosion-resistant 316 chemistry with the low-carbon specification that is particularly advantageous for welded and fabricated components.

That makes 316L an excellent choice for something that is:

  • permanently installed outdoors
  • exposed to rain and moisture
  • potentially exposed to salt and coastal conditions
  • fabricated and welded
  • expected to provide long-term structural support
  • difficult or expensive to replace once installed

The Hidden Cost Of Choosing The Wrong Material

This is the part that is often overlooked and nobody wants to replace gutter brackets.  They are not glamorous and ideally they are not something you want to be thinking about again in five years' time.  They are there to do a job quietly and reliably and that is why we think it is false economy to concentrate solely on the purchase price.

Imagine spending thousands of pounds restoring or replacing cast iron guttering on a period property, carefully choosing the correct profile, colour and finish and then supporting it with the cheapest brackets available.  The bracket might only represent a relatively small part of the overall project cost but it is doing a very important job.

If a bracket fails, access may be difficult, scaffolding may be required and guttering may need to be removed.  There is the potential for brickwork may be disturbed and then labour costs can quickly dwarf the original difference in bracket price.  Whilst our brackets more expensive, you really don’t want to find out how much the cheap ones will end up costing you.

Not All Stainless Steel Is The Same

This is something we believe every customer should know before buying; stainless steel is not a grade.  It is a family of different steels with different compositions and different performance characteristics.

So when somebody tells you that a bracket is “stainless steel”, ask which grade.  Is it 304, 316, or 316L because there can be a substantial difference between them when the application is demanding.  If you are looking at an external gutter bracket, particularly on a coastal property, heritage building or high-value restoration project, we think that question becomes even more important.

At Metal Gutter Brackets UK, we could use a cheaper stainless steel.  We could look at the initial cost of the raw material and choose a lower grade but that is not how we approach our brackets and our approach is simple and If we are going to manufacture a stainless steel gutter bracket, we want to manufacture it properly.

That means using 316L stainless steel where its properties provide the right combination of corrosion resistance, durability and suitability for fabricated components.

Our stainless steel brackets are designed and manufactured in the UK, and our range includes everything from gutter repair brackets through to rise-and-fall and bespoke bracket solutions. We specify 316L because the bracket is not a disposable component, it is part of the long-term rainwater system.

We would rather sell you a bracket that costs a little more today and gives you confidence for years to come than sell you something cheaper that leaves you wondering when you will have to replace it.

A properly specified 316L stainless steel bracket gives you a high-performance material designed for demanding environments, excellent corrosion resistance and the benefits of a low-carbon grade for fabricated and welded components.

If you are comparing gutter brackets and one is made from 304 stainless steel while another is made from 316L, you should ask yourself ‘Why am I paying a premium for stainless steel if I am not buying the grade that offers the greater level of protection I actually want?’  If the answer is simply “because it is stainless steel”, perhaps it is time to look a little closer at the numbers.
